Who did I look up to the most as a kid? That’s a tough one--ain’t really thought of this one before, neither. Ain’t never been the right occasion to, what with tendin’ to Serenity’s needs.
There was a bunch of people that I looked up to. My momma, my poppa, my brothers. A couple o’ cousins, too. I’m told there was even a mess of imaginary pals to boot! Vaguely recall them.
Some nights I admired certain folk more than others. That’s right, I remember you stealin’ my teddy bear, brother o’ mine! I let ya keep it, since ya looked so gosh darned cute holdin' it in your sleep. Who could resist that?
An’ that them selfsame imaginary friends would tell me to unscrew the bolts in certain mechanical items, causing incidents of strangeness for the adults. An’ thankfully, I outgrew that.
That weren’t quite what ya asked for though, was it? Sorry ‘bout that.
I would have to say my poppa, just fer all those times he took his wee one on trips to the engine room. The purr o' the engine...the whirlin' of the fans as they blew the wind through my already messy hair. The smell of engine grease was wonderful.
Nothin’ could tear me away from that, so I turned into a little grease monkey. Momma wasn’t the happiest 'bout it, but ‘twas nothin’ to be done to stop it.
I still admire my poppa to this day, just for introducin’ me ta the world of engines and motors and things that go whir or clang.
An’ teachin’ me how ta tell when there’s trouble in paradise. When there’s a clank that shouldn’t be there, and how you should be treatin’ it like a doctor treats patients. Checkin' for the wounds, and all...
Simon ought to understand that one. Bein’ the other doc on board this special girl, an’ all.
