Challenge: Round 5, Challenge 2: What was the most uncertain period of your life? The most certain?
Word count: 211
I’m trying a slightly different format with this one.

What was the most uncertain period of your life? The most certain?
The man looked into the face of the detainee. This one was probably the youngest yet, and female as well. He fleetingly wondered what she could have done to provoke the ire of the Alliance. The wild look in her eyes conveyed both terror and defiance. Her hands, bound by cuffs, trembled slightly. Muffled screaming could be heard, coming from somewhere down the hall.
“She’s not talking,” Book’s commanding officer grunted. “Soften her up. Do whatever it takes.” He then left Book alone with the girl. A single light bulb illuminated the tiny room. Torture devices lined the walls, from time-honored ones such as pliers, knives, and clubs to technologically-advanced creations. Book knew how to use them all.
I can’t do this any longer.
I can’t go on to another night of not being able to sleep, another day of not being able to face a mirror.
But how do I get out of this? How can I possibly leave without them hunting me down and subjecting me to the same kinds of horrors to which I have been subjecting others?
I will need to be more clever and more cunning than I ever have in order to plan and execute my escape.
The young woman looked at Book, waiting.
