Title: My Girl
Author: Angie (

Character: Kaylee
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: What in your life are you most proud of?
Word Count: 288
Well at least that’s an easy one. My girl ‘course! She’s been through a lot, like all of us. But she’s still flyin’, keepin’ us goin’, keepin’ us safe.
She holds us together, them that’s left. I thought that losin’ somebody, part of my family would be too much to bear. Wash and the Shepherd ain’t here no more, but I can still feel them when I’m on the ship.
Up on the bridge is Wash’s place. I go there to think ‘bout him. Sometimes Zoe’s there an’ we don’t speak, just sit and feel. River sits in his chair now, swears he talks to her. Don’t know if I believe that or not, but I’d sure like to think he’s out there somewhere, still helpin’ to fly Serenity.
When I stand on the ramp waitin’ for the Cap’n and Zoe comin’ back from somewhere or other, I think ‘bout the Shepherd. He had the kindest eyes I ever saw and he always made me feel safe, cuz he sounded like he knew what he was talkin’ about and that he believed we’d get through. I miss him. I never prayed all that much in my life, but I do a little now. An’ I hope he hears me when I do.
Inara stayed, after Miranda, said this was her home. I was worried maybe Zoe would leave, that it’d be too hard for her to be here, but she didn’t. An’ it’s this ship, it’s my girl that keeps them here, keeps us together.
I will always be proud of the little part I play in lookin’ after her, makin’ sure that she’s loved, so that she can keep us together for a long time to come.
