All the Anythings (River's Answer #2)

Title: All the Anythings
Author: HopefulNebula (hopefulnebula@livejournal.com)
Rating: PG
Summary: River’s response to the second challenge of [livejournal.com profile] big_damn_quests round 1: “What is the hardest decision you've ever had to make? What did you choose, and why? What influenced you to choose what you did?”
Disclaimer: Nope. Still don’t own ‘em. Still not making money off this.
Note: At two points in this, I quote from The R Tam Sessions, which are viewable at http://www.session416.com/.

To live a life where anything could happen.
And then, of all the anythings,
you can choose what you like.

~from “Summertime” by Charles Mee, whose playwriting style has heavily influenced my River voice. (It also happens to be the play I’m teching for right now.)

Somewhere I didn’t choose the Academy,
giving myself to Them. Somewhere
there’s another River
or two
or two hundred
whole, pure, innocent
rich and smiling on Osiris.
And others still there
screaming, hurting.
Each on top of the other
superimposed like thin paper in stacks
all and none at once.

In this verse:
thirteen going on fourteen
They sent a letter
on real paper, fancy
signed in fountain pen that dripped
like blood on the page.
They wanted me that badly.
An Academy, they said. The Academy.
We visited, Simon and me,
saw gardens and physicists and writers-in-residence
and dance lessons!
You can do whatever you put your mind to.
That’s what the alliance needs,
that’s what this institute is all about.
Your mind.

And I believed them.
Simon wanted me to stay,
thirteen’s so young,
and he had a feeling.
Him, the boob,
the perceptive one for once.
So I waited.
Turned fourteen that fall,
he left for the hospital again
and I sent in my decision.
They didn’t unlock my brain,
They kicked in the door.

Elsewhere:
other-Rivers smile and dance
or solve physics problems, write papers
and others scream still
just out of my hearing.
But here there’s serenity,
Serenity.
There’s Simon and Kaylee
and apples (sometimes)
and I can dance.

Words from before, truer now:
I’m not here for nothing.

Wow! Powerful stuff! Loved it. Especially--"They didn't unlock by brain, They kicked in the door." *shivers*

Very interesting... in the amazingly good way, of course. I like how you described all her other possibilities that choosing the Academy took from her, and the ones that she was saved from. Beautiful.

Great and interesting. Sounds exactly how River would feel about the Academy.

I especially love how you described how other Rivers would have chosen, and ended up.

So many Rivers but I like how she seems to finally be glad she's the one she is. It all still hurts, and having her old life back would be ideal, but now she's not the one screaming and she has a purpose.

Beautiful work.
